Sudan: the Internet remains inaccessible despite a demand for justice

A Sudanese court on Tuesday, November 9, ordered the immediate restoration of the Internet in the country. The network has been cut in Sudan since General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane’s coup on October 25, a lawyer said, but the Internet remained inaccessible at midday.

In the aftermath of his coup, General Burhane accused the online media of promoting “sedition”. He then promised a “gradual” return of the Internet.

“The Khartoum District Court has ordered the immediate return of Internet services,” Abdel Azim Hassan, member of a group of lawyers who brought the case to court with the Sudanese Protection Society, told AFP. of consumers.

Sudan has been virtually cut off from the world since October 25, when General Burhane dissolved all institutions, declared a state of emergency, arresting most of the country’s civilian leaders.

Since then, Internet access has remained largely blocked and telephone communications have also suffered interruptions, especially during monster demonstrations on October 30 denouncing the coup.

The opposition had however been able to circumvent these blockages by calling for “civil disobedience” by SMS or even via leaflets.

The international community, which almost unanimously condemned the putsch, urged the new military power to restore telecommunications.
