Santiago Nieto leaves the Financial Intelligence Unit after controversy over wedding

(Cnn in Spanish) — The presidency of Mexico reported this Monday through a statement the appointment of Pablo Gómez Álvarez as the new director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, replacing Santiago Nieto Castillo.

Gómez Álvarez assumes the position after the departure of Nieto Castillo, who was in charge of this office since December 1, 2018 and submitted his resignation this Monday.

According to the Mexican presidency, Pablo Gómez Álvarez is an economist graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

The change occurs after the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, described this Monday as “scandalous” what happened the weekend around the wedding of Santiago Nieto.

The official was married in Antigua, Guatemala, in an austere private event that does not coincide with the distinctive message of the current administration.
