PRAGUE – Slovak tennis players can no longer advance to the semifinals in the final tournament of the Billie-Jean King Cup in Prague. On Wednesday afternoon, the Slovak Tennis Association (STZ) officially confirmed on its website that Captain Matej Lipták’s team had already lost its theoretical chance of advancing from the C-group.

In it, the Slovaks first lost to the Spaniards 1: 2 and then on Tuesday they defeated the Americans in the same proportion. Only the winners of the four groups make it to the semifinals, and even before the final duel of the “céčka” between Spain and the USA (on Wednesday at 17.00 CET) it is certain that the Slovaks will not win the group.

In the case of Wednesday’s victory of the Americans over the Spaniards 2: 1 and with the equality of points and sets gained, the higher percentage of success of the won games would decide the advancement. And Slovaks can no longer have that better than one of the USA-Spain pair.

“It’s really unfortunate when this decides our elimination,” said for stz.sk Lipták during the recalculations of individual indicators. At the beginning of next year, the Slovaks will play in the qualification for promotion to the final tournament of the Billie Jean-King Cup 2022. They will know the opponent’s name on November 6 at 2 pm, when a draw will take place in Prague’s O2 arena.
