‘The laws of gravity’ at the Quirino theater in Rome with Lavia director and actor

“I hadn’t read the novel, but as soon as I saw the film on TV, at night, with Miou Miou and Sophie Marceau, the idea of ​​bringing this story to the theater immediately arose.” This is what actor and director Gabriele Lavia tells AdnKronos, starring together with his wife Federica Di Martino in the drama ‘The laws of gravity’, based on the French novel by Jean Teulé, staged until November 14 at the Quirino theater in Rome. . Lavia plays the role of a police commissioner on her last day of work before retirement, struggling with a woman firmly intent on confessing her crime, committed ten years ago and therefore one day after the statute of limitations: killing her husband , pushing him off the balcony of their apartment on the eleventh floor of the building; a crime that has been filed as suicide, due to the repeated unsuccessful attempts previously by his spouse, anaffective and violent, to put an end to his life. “We went back to the man-woman relationship described in the novel, contrary to the relationship between two women in the film.” The physical laws of gravity relating to the speed of falling bodies from top to bottom interpenetrate with the metaphysical laws of the abyss in which can sometimes slip and plunge the human soul: it is a ‘contrast’ to which the commissioner, in turn disappointed by his personal and professional life, tries to put a stop to it, fighting against “the woman’s determination to atone for her guilt : plunging to the bottom of the well of segregation in prison is a liberation for her. “Compared to the novel, in addition to the third figure of a novice policeman, there are the effects of the pouring rain and the trains whistling past the police station , “to evoke the inspector’s desire to flee from that place and that life”. A bit like the ‘train of desires’ sung by Paolo Conte … “Exactly, that’s exactly the intention”, confirms Lavia. While “the collapse of the scenographic backdrop at a certain point in the show reveals that there is a theater behind it, to underline that our history is nothing more than a play”.
