Facebook boss Mark Zurckerberg announced on Thursday nightthat the company will start operating under a new name – Meta. From now on, Facebook will only exist in the form of a brand – the name of the social network itself. Its parent company, which still bears the same name, will separate from it in terms of identity.

The new name Meta refers to the company’s long-term vision of creating a so-called metaversion. It is a kind of alternative virtual universe in which people will be able to interact with each other through the use of virtual reality.

An even more immersive experience

The head of the company begins his comprehensive contribution with the words that we are currently at the beginning of a new chapter in the Internet. Zuckerberg wants Facebook to be there.

He describes that when he started the social network from a university dormitory room more than 15 years ago, we expressed ourselves on the web mostly in text form. With the advent of smartphones, photos began to increase more and more, and with the improvement and acceleration of connectivity, video came to the fore.

The new era – metaversion – is supposed to be even more immersive. Indicates that the user will be a direct part of it.

Zuckerberg admits that a single society is not able to create a metaversion. It expects it to be gradually created by several companies that will bring the necessary products and services. Millions of creators are to take care of the content, ie the whole range of available possibilities of its use.

Metaverse is meant to offer enormous creative as well as economic possibilities.

How does he want to prove it?

Facebook, after the new Meta, wants to bring to market basic services and the necessary tools for creators and the public. It can be said that it could be a certain laying of the foundations of the metaversion. At the same time, Zuckerberg subordinates the direction of society to the achievement of this goal.

“Our task on this path is to accelerate the development of basic technologies, social platforms and creative tools to bring the metaversion to life,” says the head of the company.

At the same time, it announces that the company wants to offer its products under conditions that will enable their sufficiently large expansion.

“We plan to sell our equipment at a cost or subsidized (at a loss) to make it available to more people. We will continue to support side-loading and streaming from computers so that people can choose before we should force them to use the Quest Store to find applications or reach customers. And we will try to offer developers and creators services with lower fees in as many cases as possible, in order to maximize the overall creative economy, “promised Zuckerberg.

However, he also noted that under this approach, the company will try to “not lose too much money” in the coming years.

“We hope that over the next decade, the metaversion will reach a billion people, host hundreds of billions of dollars in the digital economy, and support jobs for millions of creators and developers,” Zuckerberg hopes.

Why change the name?

He points out that Facebook is seen as a social media company. That is true, but according to its boss, this perception is increasingly distant from what the technology giant is actually doing.

Zuckerberg likened metaversum to social networks at a time when he was just starting his own.

“I hope that in time we will be perceived as a meta-version company – and I want to anchor our work and our identity to what we are trying to rework,” explains the company’s founder.

“Our mission remains the same – it’s still about connecting people. Our applications and their brands also do not change. We are still a company that designs technology around people. However, all of our products, including applications, now share a new vision: to help bring the metaversion to life. And now we have a name that reflects the scope of what we do, “Zuckerberg describes.

He claims that the metaversion has now a higher priority than Facebook. This means, for example, that in the future the company’s services will be used without an account on the social network.

He currently described metaversion as a so-called buzzword, with no one knowing what it means. “The problem is that such buzzwords don’t have a clear definition. Whenever someone comes up with a company that suddenly goes to do a metaversion, people in the department just start rolling their eyes, “describes the expert.

However, he admits that if there is a company that could bring something to market that would approach the real metaversion in its characteristics, it is Facebook.

“They are putting a lot of pressure and investment in this direction and I believe that they would be able to do something that will really resemble that mythical metaversion,” Vincúr said.

However, he expects that this will be the result of a long-term, several-year-long effort by developers.
