MENLO PARK. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of the American company Facebook, announced that his company will be renamed Meta.

It is part of his effort to include in the company’s name his vision of virtual reality for the future, which Zuckerberg calls metaversion.

The facebook, instagram, messenger and whatsapp applications covered by the company will not be renamed. Only the parent company will change the name.

“We are a company that creates technology to connect people. Together, we can finally put people at the center of our technology. And together, we can unlock a massively larger creative economy,” Zuckerberg said.

The technology mogul claims that the metaversion will be a place where people can interact, work and create content. According to him, metaversion has the potential to help unlock access to new creative, social and economic opportunities. Zuckerberg expects to be used by a billion people over the next decade.

According to him, this meta-universe would “blur the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds”. It is supposed to be a new generation internet in which virtual reality will be massively used.

The name “Facebook” simply no longer includes “everything we do,” Zuckerberg said in explaining the change. In addition to the social network of the same name, the company now covers Instagram, Messenger, Oculus Quest virtual reality glasses, the Horizon virtual reality platform and more.

“Today, we are seen as a social media company,” said Zuckerberg. “But in our DNA, we are a company that creates technologies to connect people,” he added.

The technology giant has previously announced plans to hire 10,000 people in the European Union to build the metaversion.

Facebook under pressure

According to some American skeptics, the goal of renaming the company may be to divert attention from leaked documents that revealed the ways in which Facebook ignored internal messages and warnings about “the damage its social network is doing around the world.”

Facebook is currently facing growing calls for stricter regulation to limit its impact.

In addition, the company faced criticism last month after former employee Frances Haugen published internal studies, according to which Facebook knows that its social network can be harmful to the mental health of young people.

According to documents, Facebook knows the negatives of its algorithm, but not only does it do nothing about it, but in the name of higher profits, it still supports it.
