Watching movies and series in streaming costs up to 30 euros per year in the bill

Watching content on streaming platforms on TV for an average of 2 hours a day can cost an electricity bill up to 30 euros a year. This is what emerges from a study by Selectra, the free service that compares and activates the offers of electricity, gas and internet for companies and individuals, which has calculated how much the viewing of online content affects the bill. On the other hand, those who have already moved to the Free Market save money: the cost drops to 21.12 euros. Consumption – and therefore costs – are lower if you choose to watch movies and series via PC. The main feature of platforms such as Netflix, Timvision, Infinity, Now TV, Disney +, Amazon Prime Video, Eurosport Player, Dazn, Disney +, etc. is to make available online content that can be watched from a computer or television, even without having to download it. The catalogs of these platforms are hosted in energy-intensive serverfarms around the world, but every movie or episode watched from their devices at home also has an impact on users’ electricity bills. In addition to the subscription (monthly or annual) to the preferred streaming platform, it is in fact necessary to consider the consumption in terms of use of the TV or computer and modem. Costs vary depending on the medium you use to watch a movie or a series in streaming (computer, with an average power of 65W, or TV, with an average power of 130W), the average daily playback time (30 minutes or 2 hours) and the type of supply contract that you have (or if you have an offer in the Free Market or in the Protected Market). All this also taking into account the use of the modem, whose average power is 10.4W. In fact, Selectra calculates, we get to consume up to 102 kWh per year (considering a use of 730 hours) and to emit about 41 kg of CO2. This is the same kWh consumption that you have at home using appliances such as the electric oven for 52 hours, the vacuum cleaner for 57 hours, the hairdryer for 56 hours, or the washing machine for 110 cycles and the dishwasher for 102 cycles (5 kg of cotton linen at 60 ° or 12 place settings). On the other hand, 11.4 euros per year are spent if the streaming contents are used via PC with a supply on the Free Market, which allows you to save about 5 euros a year: on the Tutelato, in fact, you spend up to 16.08 euros a year. . Watching an episode on television every day in streaming lasting about 30 minutes instead leads to spending € 5.28 per year on Libero and € 7.44 on Tutelato. Through PC, consumption is lowered and consequently also costs: € 2.88 per year on Libero and € 4.08 on Tutelato.
